    Editors / Flaneur Magazine

Flaneur is a nomadic, independent magazine focussing on one street per issue. The magazine embraces the street’s complexity, its layers and fragmented nature with a literary approach. The content of the magazine is produced with and for Flaneur by artists of all disciplines while the team spends two months on location. It is made using a collaborative, impulsive and unconventional approach. The magazine attempts to use a single microcosm to tell universal stories.

What is it about?

Flaneur is an interdisciplinary practice, documenting its months-long on-site collaborative process in the format of a magazine. Flaneur depicts a different street in the world per issue. The editors of Flaneur are hosting a three-day workshop introducing their unique methodology. Employing psychogeographic and collaborative strategies, the workshop will provide a creative reading of the cityscape that reveals the hidden layers and mythologies of the place. The workshop is an opportunity for inter-disciplinary collaboration: various disciplines concerned with spatial narratives are invited to widen their understanding of how to read the urban fabric that surrounds us.

What will we work on?

A one-off magazine created by the participants

Prior to the workshop, the editors of Flaneur choose a street or an area to focus on. Here the editors and the workshop participants will set up a temporary office (in this case the Scuola Open Source headquarters) where the production of a one-off magazine created by the participants will take place. The editors will introduce their methodology and discuss previous examples of how streets can be approached employing various narrative strategies. Then the participants enter a collaborative exploration of the place, forming individual projects for the day. Guided by the editors they will in an ongoing dialogue bring these fragments of the street into the temporary editorial office where they are weaved together in collaboration with a graphic designer. That way the magazine is developed throughout the day as a direct reaction to the participant’s insights and the collaborations within the group. Participants furthermore are encouraged to venture into disciplines they are less familiar with.

The workshop will introduce a methodology employed and developed by Flaneur Magazine over the last six years. The methodology is deeply collaborative and versatile so that the participants will receive tools and input to work with their surroundings in the future.

The intensity and collaborative nature of the workshop leads to vibrant dialogues and exchanges between participants while there is space for contemplation and working thoroughly.

The final result is a publication that employs methods of psychogeography.
