Daniel Gross & Joris Maltha — Graphic Designers & Teachers @ Catalogtree
Daniel Gross & Joris Maltha
Graphic Designers & Teachers / Catalogtree
Catalogtree is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Arnhem (NL) and Berlin (DE). It was founded in 2001 by Daniel Gross and Joris Maltha who met at Werkplaats Typografie. Nina Bender joined the studio in 2011. The studio works continuously on commissioned and self-initiated projects. Highly interested in self-organizing systems they believe in 'Form Equals Behaviour'. Experimental tool-making, programming, typography and the visualization of quantitative data are part of their daily routine. Recent endeavors include bin-packing a book design, etching chladni patterns and auto-detecting helipads in satellite footage of São Paulo. Daniel Gross and Joris Maltha teach at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem (NL), all three have taught and lectured widely. The work of Catalogtree is in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Museum of Design. More info and projects at: https://www.catalogtree.net
When lightning hits the sand, a charge of more than 1 million volts rapidly discharges into the ground leaving a trace of glass tubes in the shape of its path.
On occasion, these intricate shapes are exposed through erosion or wind. This is when they are discovered.
But human behavior leaves their own traces on the beach and we do not have to wait for the wind to uncover it for us. Based on sand samples from the beaches of Normandy, the stage for the invasion on D-Day in the Second World War, recent research has found that microscopic particles of shrapnel from the explosions are still dispersed across the sand to this day.
Design and implementation of models of metal detectors that will be used to collect objects from the beach. The output will be the visualization of map data printed on paper.
→ BUILD METAL DETECTOR
The simplest metal detector is easy to build: take an AM receiver, switch it on to any channel, use tape to stick a pocket calculator to it in such a way that it disrupts the radio signal, notice how the disruption changes when you move this closer to the metal.
But more advanced or experimental versions are possible too. On this day, each team will build their own metal detector.
9:30 - 12:30
→ Introduction to the workshop / Introduction to building a metal detector
12:30 - 13:30
→ Lunch
13:30 - 16:30
→ In teams of three, participants will work on building a metal detector.
16:30 - 17:30
→ Initial metal detecting tests
→ USE METAL DETECTOR
Participants will spend the day on Pane e Pomodoro Beach. Working with their teams, they will devise a method of combing the Beach with their experimental detectors and document what they find including any non-metal treasure that they might discover.
9:30 - 10:30
→ Introduction to the day at SOS / Final tweaks to the detector
10:30 - 11:00
→ We collectively cycle to the beach
11:00 - 12:30
→Detector tests / Team discussions on search and documentation tactics
12:30 - 13:30
→ "Pane e Pomodoro for Lunch"!
13:30 - 17:30
→ TREASURE HUNT
→ SHOW FINDINGS / DETECT SOME MORE
On this day, the teams will start to work on the visualization of their findings. As a starting point, we will work with a combination of open street maps and QGis but we can move to other tools as the need arises.
9:30 - 10:30
→ Introduction to the use of OSM in combination with QGis
10:30 - 12:30
→ Teams work on their Beach Map
12:30 - 13:30
→ Lunch
13:30 - 15:30
→ Teams work on their Beach Map / what is missing in the data?
15:30 - 17:30 x
→ One last run to the beach? Add other data sources?
→ PRESENTATION
9:30 - 12:30
→ Teams work on their maps
12:30 - 13:30
→ Lunch
13:30 - 15:30
→ Teams work on their maps
15:30 - 17:30
→ PRESENTATION TIME!
17:30
→ LATE drinks (on the beach)
